Now on the last day (en de tēi eschatēi hēmerāi). The eighth day which was “an holy convocation,” kept as a Sabbath (Lev_23:36), apparently observed as a memorial of the entrance into Canaan, hence “the great day of the feast” (tēi megalēi tēs heortēs).
Stood and cried (histēkei kai ekrasen). Past perfect active of histēmi used as imperfect and intransitive and first aorist active of krazō. Picture Jesus standing (linear) and suddenly crying out (punctiliar).
If any man thirst (ean tis dipsāi). Third class condition with ean and present active subjunctive of dipsaō, “if any one is thirsty.” On each of the seven preceding days water was drawn in a golden pitcher from the pool of Siloam and carried in procession to the temple and offered by the priests as the singers chanted Isa_12:3 : “With joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” “It is uncertain whether the libations were made upon the eighth day. If they were not made, the significant cessation of the striking rite on this one day of the feast would give a still more fitting occasion for the words” (Westcott).

He that believeth on me (ho pisteuōn eis eme). Nominative absolute as is not uncommon.
The scripture (hē graphē). No precise passage can be quoted, though similar idea in several (Isa_55:1; Isa_58:11; Zec_13:1; Zec_14:8; Eze_47:1; Joe_3:18). Chrysostom confines it to Isa_28:16 by punctuation (only the nominative absolute as the Scripture).
Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water (potamoi ek tēs koilias autou reusousin hudatos zōntos). Some ancient Western writers connect pinetō of Joh_7:37 with ho pisteuōn in Joh_7:38. By this arrangement autou (his) with koilias is made to refer to Christ, not to the believer. Burney argues that koilia is a mistranslation of the Aramaic (fountain, not belly) and that the reference is to Eze_47:1. C.C. Torrey refers to Zec_14:8. But the Eastern writers refer autou (his) to the believer who not only quenches in Christ his own thirst, but becomes a source of new streams for others (Joh_4:14). It is a difficult question and Westcott finally changed his view and held autou to refer to Christ. Reusousin is future active indicative of reō, old verb, to flow, here only in the N.T.

That I shall give him (hou egō dōsō autōi). Relative hou attracted to the case (genitive) of the antecedent (hudatos). Future active indicative of didōmi.
Shall never thirst (ou mē dipsēsei eis ton aiona). The double negative ou mē is used with either the future indicative as here or the aorist subjunctive, the strongest possible negative. See both constructions (ou mē peinasēi and ou me dipsēsei) in Joh_6:35. Jesus has not answered the woman’s question save by the necessary implication here that he is superior to Jacob.
A well of water springing up unto eternal life (pēgē hudatos hallomenou eis zōēn aiōnion). “Spring (or fountain) of water leaping (bubbling up) unto life eternal.” Present middle participle of hallomai, old verb, in N.T. only here and Act_3:8; Act_14:10. The woman’s curiosity is keenly excited about this new kind of water.

all that forsake thee shall be ashamed; who forsake him as the Hope of Israel, and place their hope elsewhere; in the creature, in themselves, in their riches, in their righteousness, and profession of religion; such shall be ashamed of their vain hope; whereas a true hope, a hope upon the right object, on Christ the Hope of Israel, makes not ashamed; nor shall the man that has it be ashamed of that. The Targum paraphrases it,
"all who forsake thy worship shall be ashamed;''
for they forsake their own mercies, who forsake the house and ordinances of God, and the assembling of themselves together:
and they that depart from me; the prophet; refusing to hear the word of the Lord by him, which was all one as departing from the Lord. Some render it, "from thee", as the Vulgate Latin and Arabic versions; and so the Targum,
"and the ungodly that transgress thy word;''
whose heart departed from the Lord, as in
Jer 17:1 notwithstanding their show of devotion and religion. Some render the words, "that are chastised by me"; but repent not, and are not reformed thereby; reading not וסורי, as the Masorites direct, and we, and many others, follow; but according to the letters, and retaining them, יסורי (x):
shall be written in the earth; have a name among earthly and carnal men, and be called so, being sensual and carnal, and minding nothing but earth and earthly things; and shall not be written among the living in Jerusalem, or have a name and a place among spiritual men: or they shall be of a short continuance; their memory shall rot; their names be put out for ever; and their memorial perish with them; for things written in the dust do not continue, but are presently destroyed by a puff of wind, or by the treading of the foot upon them; or they shall die, and return to the earth, and be laid in the grave, as Jarchi and Kimchi interpret it; or shall perish eternally, die the second death, being not written in the Lamb's book of life. The Targum is,
"into hell shall they fall.''
The phrase is opposed to a being written, or having names written in heaven, Luk_10:20; which is the same as to be written in the book of life, or to be ordained unto eternal life, Phi_4:3; and what is the case of such who are not written in heaven, but in earth, may be seen in Rev_20:15;
because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters; See Gill on Jer_2:13.
(w) מקוה, the word here used, sometimes signifies a confluence or collection of waters, as in Gen_1:10 and elsewhere, a place to bathe in; hence Fortunatus Scacchus, in Sacror. Eleaochr. Myrothec. l. 1. c. 23. col. 159. renders it here, "the bath of Israel", the Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ, whose blood is a fountain opened, in which sinners wash, and are cleansed from their sins, Zech. xiii. 1. and this agrees with the latter part of the verse, where the Lord is called "the fountain of living water"; so De Dieu, on ch. xiv. 8, observes, the word is so used in Exod. vii. 21. and so R. Akiba interprets the words, saying,
"what is "the meaning of מקוה? it is that which cleanses the unclean; even so God cleanses Israel;''
and it is, adds De Dieu, as if you were to call God the pool of Israel, or a confluence of waters where Israel may be washed from his filth. (x) "Castigati a me", Schmidt; so Stockius, p. 455, 725, Junius & Tremellius follow the same reading, only they render the words, not so properly, "castigationes meae".
